Scientists have found evidence of regular long-distance travel among ancient Polynesians. This was reported by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology.

Ancient inhabitants of Polynesia, a region in eastern Australia, were known for their sea-walking skills. They reached the Pacific islands (for example, the Cook Islands and Hawaii) in the first millennium of our era, having been there long before the Europeans. At the same time, Polynesian natives had to migrate thousands of kilometers from their ancestral homes in Southeast Asia, though it is unclear how much contact they had with other islands.

To find out, the scientists conducted geochemical analysis of stone tools found in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and the Caroline Islands between 1978 and 2019. These tools cut, they were versatile cutting tools similar to axes. Six of the eight incisors or incisors analyzed by the researchers turned out to be mined at the same large fortified Tatagamatau quarry complex on the island of Tutuila (American Samoa), more than 2,500 kilometers from New Guinea.

According to the authors, the transport of such socially valuable items, often passed down from generation to generation among Polynesian chiefs, involves carefully planned journeys rather than episodic journeys without knowledge of geography.
