Scientists of the First Moscow State Medical University. Sechenov created a special diet selection service for patients with progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). A personalized diet can help delay dialysis, reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, and improve quality of life. This was reported to socialbites.ca at Moscow State Medical University. Sechenov.
The application calculates the individual amount of protein and trace elements based on weight, height, pressure, indicators of potassium, phosphorus, glucose, blood cholesterol, as well as data on the CKD stage. Based on these data, the program will publish the norms of nutrition necessary for a person.
The service will also warn the patient if he exceeds his norm for any indicator and advise to consult a doctor in special cases.
Chronic kidney disease is called the “silent killer.” It can go unnoticed for many years without bothering anyone, and then lead to complications, disability, fatal kidney failure, and dialysis.
Along with drug therapy, doctors also prescribe a diet to reduce the burden on the kidneys and reduce the risk of CKD progression. It provides a small amount of protein, phosphorus, potassium and a certain amount of calorie consumption. Now, to control nutrition, patients with CKD keep a food diary and create their own diet, coordinating with doctor’s recommendations.
“It’s very difficult for patients to count all of this manually. Faced with such a complexity, many patients evaluate the indicators “by eye” approximately or not at all. According to this, this situation causes distortions in nutrition, affecting tests and well-being, and urea and creatinine increase in such patients,” said AINV Sklifosovsky Sechenov University of the Russian Ministry of Health Ludmila Milovanova.
The service will also make the doctor’s job easier: based on electronic data, he will see where the patient made a mistake and immediately adjust his diet and even his treatment. In the future, it will be possible to regularly upload the results of the analysis to the program – they will be analyzed by artificial intelligence.
