Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh have discovered that menthol-flavored vape juices are more dangerous than others – they lead to impaired lung function. The results of the study will be published in the journal. magazine respiratory research.
The researchers used a custom robotic system that mimics the mechanics of human respiration, temperature, humidity, lung capacity, and breathing time. The system can measure the size and number of aerosol particles produced and how these parameters change depending on the composition of the e-cigarette liquid.
As it turns out, liquids containing menthol produce higher amounts of toxic microparticles than analogues without added menthol. In addition, the scientists examined data on patients who smoked. Those who preferred menthol liquids had shallower breaths, indicating worse lung function. Moreover, the outcome was not dependent on age, gender, smoking experience, or nicotine content in the liquid.
Previously, scientists found that one of the causes of lung damage associated with vaping or vaping is the presence of vitamin E acetate in them. It is completely safe when exposed externally, but causes the lungs to malfunction when inhaled.
