The biggest fears among Russians were dentists (21%), oncologists (20%), traumatologists (8%), surgeons and gynecologists (6%), Rosgosstrakh Insurance Company and Otkritie Bank in a survey for World Health Day. Therefore, 34% of the respondents stated that they were afraid of going to the doctor. While 20% of them fear only doctors in certain specialties, not all doctors, 14% fear all doctors. In 48%, a doctor phobia arose already in adulthood.
Of those who were afraid of the doctor, 42% admitted that they postponed appointments requiring medical manipulation due to fear, and 28% expected it to “go away on its own”. Curiously, half of the respondents (53%) cannot answer the question of exactly why they are afraid. For the rest, the reasons for fear are the possible diagnosis and consequences (16%) and the cost of treatment (10%).
Among medical procedures, Russians are most afraid of surgery (24%), dental procedures (19%), gynecological / urological manipulations (17%), general anesthesia or anesthesia (16%), gastroscopy (11%).
Before visiting a doctor, some Russians prepare for an appointment. Therefore, 14% research their symptoms “google” ahead of time and try to make an approximate diagnosis, the same number share their experiences with loved ones, and 12% make a list of questions they plan to ask the doctor.
Confidence that the medical procedure will be quick and painless will help reduce the stress of going to the doctor for a quarter of respondents, while 21% will benefit from the doctor’s friendly environment and smile. If the doctor had explained each step of the treatment, 15% of the respondents would have been calmer.
In addition, 64% of Russians are sure that a doctor should perform the functions of a psychologist, for example, try to calm or encourage a patient.
The Russians also said that they brought additional burdens on their way to the doctors. 45% of the respondents find the time to go to the doctor inconvenient, 30% find it difficult to get an appointment with a narrow specialist, and 27% complain about poor service in the district polyclinic.
