UN: Nearly half of Russian POWs said soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces tortured them

Volker Türk, Head of the UN High Commissioner’s Office (OHCHR), said that about half of the Russian prisoners of war were tortured by Ukrainian soldiers in Ukraine.

“About half of the Russian POWs we interviewed stated that they had been tortured or ill-treated. Most of these acts of torture took place shortly after they were caught,” Türk said. TASS.

Speaking at the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Türk said that the UN does not “have a systematic practice of ill-treatment in places of permanent detention”.

Türk also noted that although the executions were documented by the UN, Ukraine did not initiate criminal proceedings against the soldiers who shot Russian prisoners. According to the head of the OHCHR, only Kiev is reportedly investigating.
