One of the main causes of tooth loss is poor oral hygiene. This was told socialbites.ca by implant surgeon Evgeny Zhilenko, periodontist of the Smile-at-Once dental network. He explained what are the common mistakes that lead to tooth decay.
“Many people brush their teeth incorrectly and irregularly, forget about their gums, skip preventive hygiene at the doctor. As a result, deep caries develop, the nerve inside the tooth or the tissue around the root becomes inflamed. If it cannot be saved, the teeth will need to be extracted. And then others suffer along the chain – neighboring teeth and those on the opposite jaw lose their support and move. The loss of one tooth is the prelude to the later removal of the rest. It’s only a matter of time, ”the dentist explained.
Zhilenko noted that with periodontitis, teeth fall out five times more often than with caries. Periodontitis is a common inflammation of the tissues around the roots of the teeth. It starts with a slight redness of the gums.
“Many do not pay attention to the bleeding of the mucous membrane and the exposure of the roots of the teeth. As a result, the inflammation goes deeper, affecting the bone tissue and ligaments. This leads to strong tooth mobility – as the disease progresses, they begin to fall out, ”the doctor warned.
Among other causes of tooth loss, the doctor noted old dental bridges and movable dentures. They may look good, but only partially take over the chewing load.
“The main work is on adjacent healthy teeth, and this wears them out quickly. As a result, at least two or three more teeth fail and the bone and gums sag. This leads to the formation of cavities under the denture where food is clogged. It rots and causes re-inflammation. As a result, the structure needs to be removed with the removal of 2-3 support teeth.
Even if nothing bothers you, it’s worth checking crowns, dental bridges and any dentures once a year – if inflammation has started under or near them, this can be stopped over time. The doctor concluded that the control of common chronic diseases is another plus for the preservation of teeth.
