There are varieties of strawberries that have a distinctive taste and aroma whatever the weather. Natalya Andronova, senior researcher at the All-Russian Elective and Technological Institute of Horticulture and Nursery under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, told socialbites.ca.
The end of March is the last chance to start growing strawberry seedlings. In order not to waste time and garden space, you should choose the varieties carefully.
“Stably, that is, regardless of weather conditions, the selection varieties of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution of the Federal Center for Horticulture Science have a sweet taste: Kupchikha, Rosinka, Slavutich, Muska, Kokinskaya Zarya, Tsaritsa, Bereginya, Kokinskaya Early , Lyubava. The Slavutich variety is characterized by the presence in its fruits of the aroma of wild strawberries, which is quite rare in garden strawberries. The fruits of the Kupchikha variety zemklubnika have a fragrant coconut flavor, which is transmitted from strawberry-strawberry hybrids. Good taste (taste point 4.0-4.5 points) is distinguished by varieties of foreign selection: Clery, Honey, Mitse Schindler, Rosana Kievskaya, Dachnitsa, Gloskap, Venta, Alba, Darselect, Polka, Sarah, ”said Andronova.
Taste qualities are largely determined by the genotype of the variety, but weather also has an effect. Therefore, rainy, cool summers will yield juicy, but less sweet, and high vitamin C fruits. Drought and heat cause the fruits to become deformed and small. Ideal conditions are high temperatures and moderate precipitation.
