Doctors reported a method with 80% reliability for choosing the sex of a child. In this respect informs weather.
The researchers used the method of separating the sperm according to whether it is a male X chromosome or just a Y chromosome. It turned out that the sperm carrying the X chromosome were slightly heavier than those carrying the Y chromosome.
However, the study sparked renewed debate about the ethics of such a process. Receiving embryos for no reason, such as for a sex-related illness, is illegal in many countries. The authors of the method at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York said their method is inexpensive and “extremely safe.” The experiment involved 1317 couples in which 105 men used the sperm separation method. 59 couples requested girls, and doctors received female embryos in 79.1% of cases (231 out of 292). Of these, 16 girls were born without any anomaly. Fifty-six couples wanted boys, and 79.6% of male embryos (223 out of 280) were obtained by this method, resulting in 13 healthy boys.
However, some experts have expressed serious concerns despite the method’s apparent effectiveness. “The technical advances demonstrated are minor compared to the serious ethical issues raised by the study,” said Dr Channa Jayasena, head of andrology at Imperial College London.
“They offer sperm selection as an ‘ethical’ alternative to embryo selection,” he said. “I find this absurd because sperm selection is just another way of selecting embryos to manipulate the sex of the offspring in a way that has detrimental consequences for society.”
