Two new copepod species have been discovered in the Arctic waters of Siberia. This was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Name of one of the species Bryocamptusputoranus Novikov, Sharafutdinova&Chertoprudits representatives live in the waters of the mountain lakes of the Putorana Plateau. another kind, Bryocamptusabramovae Novikov, Sharafutdinova&Chertoprud, inhabits thermokarstic lakes in the lower reaches of the Lena River (in the delta region). Such peculiar names were given in honor of the authors of the discovery, KFU graduate student Alexander Novikov and his co-authors. These crustaceans differ from known species by the ornamentation of their floating legs, the structural features of their limbs, and the location of their sense organs on the skin. where Bryocamptusabramovae Novikov, Sharafutdinova&Chertoprud It is also found in the lakes of Wrangel Island, thousands of kilometers from the lower Lena.

“Both the Lena River Delta and Wrangel Island were formerly part of the ancient land of Beringia, now partially submerged by the ocean. Presumably, this Harpacticoid species formerly inhabited the area connecting the Wrangel Islands to the mainland. And the area now known is the larger are parts of an ancient site,” the scientists explained this oddity.

This study shows that a wide variety of crustaceans are found even in reservoirs unsuitable for life in the far north.

Formerly zoologists removed water “spitting” on video of unique freshwater mussels.
