Scientists from Griffith University have found that bariatric surgery effectively relieves obese patients from type 2 diabetes. Research published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels due to the body’s inability to use insulin properly. This condition is often associated with obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and an unhealthy diet. In some cases, bariatric surgery may be used to treat obesity to reduce stomach volume.
212 patients who had undergone gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy were included in the study. 12 months after surgery, their body weight had decreased by 24%. The level of glucose in the blood dropped by the same amount.
In addition, approximately 50% of patients were able to stop any diabetes-related treatment. In 37% of the patients with hypertension, the pressure returned to normal after one year. Most of them also had improved kidney function. Overall patient satisfaction with the treatment was over 97.5% during the recovery period.
