A supplement derived from the rosella plant has been shown to be effective against obesity, according to a team of scientists at the Royal Melbourne University of Technology. The results of the study were: published In the International Journal of Food Science and Technology.

The researchers sublimated the plant’s flowers and obtained two mixtures: the first contained phenolic extracts and the second contained organic acids. Cell lines grown in the lab were then treated with these formulations. Fat content did not change in acid-treated cells. The second row had 95% less fat than the control cells.

The authors stated that phenolic extracts inhibit the digestive enzyme lipase. It allows fats to be broken down into small pieces so that they can be absorbed by the body through the intestines. Excess fat turns into fat cells. Due to the properties of the extract, oil cannot be absorbed, so it passes through the colon as waste.

According to scientists, a medicine based on rosella extract may be safer for the body. In the future, scientists will conduct a series of studies.
