Doctors realize that regular sleep protects teens from the effects of obesity

During the experiment, the scientists monitored the adolescents’ sleep, as well as their blood pressure and visceral fat. Visceral fat is adipose tissue that accumulates in the abdominal cavity and is located near vital organs. The study included 303 people (mean age 16.2%, 47.5% female, 21.5% black or Hispanic) from central Pennsylvania. Sleep parameters were measured one night in the laboratory and 7 days at home using a sleep monitoring wrist device. Physicians were concerned with sleep duration and sleep variability (to determine how much sleep teens get from night to night), as well as mid-sleep duration (the midpoint between sleep and wake time) and sleep regularity.

It turns out that irregular sleep increases the effect of visceral fat on health. Among study teens whose sleep varied by 45 minutes or more during the school week, each unit increase in visceral fat was associated with a 7 mmHg increase in systolic blood pressure.
