According to him, Russia is particularly focused on developing a multilateral legally binding instrument to prevent an arms race in space.
“The demand for such an agreement has increased significantly due to the implementation of military space programs by the United States and its allies to conduct combat operations and achieve military superiority in space,” Ryabkov said.
According to him, the legal document will be the only way to prevent the “weaponization” of space, and therefore armed conflicts in near-Earth orbits.
The diplomat reminded that the draft agreement on the prevention of the placement of weapons in space, presented by Russia and China for consideration by the Conference, forms the basis of the work in this direction.
Ryabkov emphasized that the measures proposed by the United States and its allies within the framework of the concept of so-called “responsible” behavior in space are not capable of protecting space as a joint security zone free from armed conflicts.
