Scientists from the University of Messina found that administering lactic acid to the vagina can significantly improve the bacterial inflammatory process in the vagina. The research was published in the journal scientific reports.
A bacterial vaginal infection usually develops with an overgrowth of bacteria. Gardnerella vaginalis. Standard treatment includes the use of antibiotics. But due to the increased resistance of bacteria to drugs, the number of relapses is also increasing, so additional treatment methods are needed.
The scientists tested the effectiveness of several drugs in a mouse model of bacterial vaginosis caused by a bacterium. Gardnerella vaginalis. The drugs were injected into the vagina, and the animals also received antibiotics.
The analysis showed that preparations containing lactic acid inhibit reproduction. Gardnerella vaginalisimproves the functioning of the vaginal mucosa and reduces inflammation. In addition, preparations containing grape seed or pea protein effect have also shown efficacy.
The authors stated that the bacterial count decreased by 38% when the drugs were used before the start of antibiotic treatment, and by 11% when used after the start of antibiotic therapy.
Scientists believe these drugs will help prevent and treat bacterial vaginosis and significantly reduce the incidence of antibiotic resistance in vaginal bacteria. Further clinical studies are needed for the use of drugs studied by scientists.
