Sudden death among young vapers can be caused by an overdose of nicotine or exposure to unspecified impurities. Marine Gambaryan, head of the Center for Tobacco Consumption Prevention and Control of the National Medical Research Center for Treatment and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, informed socialbites.ca about this.
“Such cases have been recorded both in Russia and in other countries. Most often the causes are poisoning with nicotine or impurities in liquids. The lethal dose of nicotine is about 1 mg per kilogram of body weight. To get an overdose of nicotine while smoking regular cigarettes, a teenager would need to smoke several packs, which is unlikely to happen. With the help of a vape, this milestone is much easier to overcome. By law, the amount of nicotine should not exceed 20 mg per ml of liquid. However, there are separate nicotine boosters that the user adds themselves, for example, to increase the nicotine concentration in the liquid. And here it is already difficult to calculate a safe threshold without going beyond that,” he explained.
He also added that not all manufacturers specify the composition exactly and may contain potentially dangerous ingredients that the buyer does not know about – there are no longer technical regulations on this issue and there is no control over the composition of liquids.
