The organization explains that from 2016 to 2020, maternal mortality increased in two of eight UN regions – Europe and North America (17%) and Latin America and the Caribbean (15%).

Severe bleeding, high blood pressure, pregnancy-related infections, complications from unsafe abortion, and comorbidities exacerbated by pregnancy (HIV/AIDS and malaria) were cited as the main causes of death.
WHO urges the global community to accelerate progress towards global goals to reduce maternal mortality, as more than one million women are predicted to die by 2030.
