Germany has registered the world’s fifth confirmed case for a complete cure for HIV. It has been reported abcnews.
Successful treatment of a patient from Dusseldorf was known for the first time in 2019, but then researchers were unable to provide information about the full recovery of an HIV-infected person. In February 2023, researchers announced that a 53-year-old man still had no detectable virus in his body, even after he stopped taking his HIV medication.
“It’s really a cure, not just a long-term remission. This positive-looking symbol is encouraging, but there’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Dr. Bjorn-Erik Ole Jensen.
According to the source, the patient recovered after a stem cell transplant, which is usually only applied to cancer patients. The main purpose of a transplant is to cure cancer, but in a few cases this procedure has also led to HIV treatment.
