The alligator released into the wild was caught in New York. In this respect informs ABC news.

The reptile was spotted Sunday morning at Prospect Park, a popular spot for Brooklyn residents to picnic and walk their pets. The air temperature was around 10-15 degrees, which was significantly different from the warm habitat this species is familiar with in the southeastern United States.

The crocodile was caught by the park rangers, its body length reached 1.2 meters. New York City Parks said in a statement that experts found the animal “very lethargic and possibly shocked by the cold.”

The service added that urban public spaces are not suitable shelters for non-native animals, that releasing them into the wild is illegal and “could lead to the extinction of native species and deteriorate water quality.”

The alligator was later taken to the Bronx Zoo for rehabilitation. A New York alligator was last found in June 2001, when authorities, the press, and residents followed the pursuit and capture of a vagrant slide in Central Park for five days.
