Sexologists from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Glasgow have found that middle-aged women’s sexual activity is more related to lifestyle and stress levels than menopause. Research published Journal of Gender Studies.

The scientists used survey data of more than two thousand women aged 40 to 59. One-third of them had not had sex for at least a month at the time of the study.

After taking into account a number of factors, the researchers found that age and menopausal status had little effect on the frequency and quality of sex. The main reasons for the decrease in sexual activity were relationships with a partner, lifestyle and general health.

Repeated surveys of women confirmed the results of the study. Few have linked the menopause to a decrease in the quality or frequency of sex. It turned out that there was a lot of pressure on middle-aged women. Interviewees complained of busy schedules and problems reconciling family, work and social life. Many faced financial difficulties while caring for children and aging parents.

Additionally, the researchers found that sex frequency was not associated with satisfaction with sex life. The study could change the way medical professionals and scientists view the sexual well-being of menopausal women.
