Scientists from Northeastern University in the USA found that video games can provide better balance than regular physical therapy. The research was published in the journal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Archives.

Doctors conducted a meta-analysis of more than 100 studies examining the effects of active video games (such as Wii Fit and Dance Dance Revolution) on improving balance. Scientists have discovered that such video games do not worsen people’s balance than regular exercise. This effect was particularly pronounced in children and the elderly. Additionally, active video games can be helpful for people with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or cerebral palsy.

Scientists attribute this effectiveness of video games to the fact that they are more fun and more motivating than traditional forms of physical therapy that provide immediate feedback.

The authors hope that in the future medical professionals will be able to use active video games as another tool in their physiotherapy toolbox.
