A group of scientists from the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University, IMET RAS, MNII them. Herzen and PMGMU them. Sechenova found that phosphate bone implants containing strontium take root better. This was reported to socialbites.ca at Moscow State University.

All bones are made up of phosphates. Scientists often use a variety of materials for implantation, including phosphate ceramics. But the bone-like composition does not exclude the possibility of rejection of the prosthesis by the body, which brings additional problems and costs to the patient.

“The phosphates found in the human body mainly belong to two structural types: hydroxyapatite and whitlockite. Since it is more soluble than hydroxyapatite, we started to study materials based on whitlockite and it is this property that allows us to produce new bone tissue in a reasonable time. “At the same time, we wanted to not only minimize the rejection of materials by the body, but also give the implants other capabilities: to promote cell division, promote greater healing of the affected area, and have an antibacterial effect.” The authors of the study are Dina Deineko, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemical Technology and New Chemical Materials at Moscow State University.

To achieve these goals, the research team created a material containing varying amounts of strontium ions. As a result of a series of experiments, scientists managed not only to obtain an improved material for implants, but also to develop a new approach to study the biological properties of this class of compounds.

The data obtained together with the approach developed for examining the biological properties of phosphates will make it possible to create materials with high biocompatibility index.
