Symptoms of epilepsy in a child can vary: from convulsions to fading to “withdrawal”. This was told socialbites.ca by Tatyana Kazennykh, MD, psychiatrist-epileptologist, head of the Center for Paroxysmal Conditions of the Research Institute of Mental Health of the Tomsk National Research Medical Center.

“Actually, there are about 30 types of seizures—these can be non-convulsive seizures with muscle spasms, twitches, and clouding of consciousness. The so-called absences may be fading. They are most often found in children. Moms often say: “Oh, I have a very intelligent child – he freezes, thinks, shuts himself down”, but in the end it turns out to be a manifestation of epilepsy. Of course, a convulsive attack attracts the most attention, but other symptoms are also not unusual, ”explained Kazennykh.

The doctor noted that if the child does not have clinical manifestations – attacks or disturbing consciousness disorders, then they usually do not need additional examination. Also, do not be afraid that epilepsy will not go unnoticed: if it does, it will certainly be detected.
