“This is a huge advance that we couldn’t have foreseen a few months ago,” said HZB professor Steve Albrecht, who assures his team is “working together with success and passion” to reach this milestone. The success was confirmed by the Italy-based European Solar Testing Establishment (ESTI), which measures the cell’s efficiency.

The secret of this breakthrough lies in the properties of perovskite with modified interface.. Researchers participating in the project were able to reduce efficiency losses after examining the properties of this material in detail. Later, they made tandem solar cells combined with others with better optics, thus achieving higher efficiency.

In practice, two different cells are combined on top of each other, the perovskite cell being the one on top. Thin layers between the two allow to maximize the use of light and minimize electrical losses.

“We’re very excited about the new value because it’s perovskite/silicone tandem technology shows great promise To contribute to a sustainable energy supply,” explained Albrecht.

HZB Scientific Director Bernd Rech emphasizes: “The efficiency of HZB tandem solar cells is now 32.5 percent, in the range previously achieved only with expensive III/V semiconductors. The NREL graph clearly shows how spectacular the last two increases of EPFL and HZB are . . . ”
