Champagne cork can cause serious eye injury. About said Ophthalmologist of the eye microsurgery center “socialbites.ca” “I understand” Alexander Kuskov.

Carelessness during the New Year holidays can cause injury. Greetings are traditionally considered the most dangerous feature of the new year, which can lead to burns and traumatic amputation of the fingers. Less dangerous, but funny injuries are caused by carelessly opening a bottle of champagne – in case the popping cork gets into the eye.

“Traumatologists and ophthalmologists have a strange classification of New Year’s eye injuries. The most fun and at the same time serious injury is getting a champagne cork in the eye. The most “successful” way to get rid of such an injury is a hematoma, if the blow fell on the eyebrow. But if the fungus has “jumped” into the eye and the victim has condensation in the eyes, loss of peripheral vision, a veil or “curtain” has appeared, you need to urgently go to the eye emergency room, “says the doctor.

Such an impact can cause lens displacement, contusion of the eyeball, and even retinal detachment. “Extremely adverse changes occur during eye contusion, because a cork strike is a powerful shock wave transmitted to all eye structures: the lens can move, become cloudy – it will have to be removed, an artificial lens must be inserted.” explains Kuskov.

In the worst case, with a strong blow, the optic nerve is ruptured – in this case, modern medicine is powerless, and one eye of the person is irreversibly blinded. In this context, warning labels have been placed on the bottles in many countries, warning people not to point them at people when opening the bottle.
