Psychologists at Baylor University have identified factors that may predict risky sexual behavior in children. The results were published in the journal Sexual Behavior Archives.

“Once kids start dating at puberty, this is often associated with risky sexual behavior (for example, more sexual partners, sex with strangers). Therefore, it is important to know the factors that can predict such behavior in children. “Our results may provide a basis for preventing early onset of sexual activity.”

The study included 109 boys and 61 girls in early adolescence. All participants filled out a questionnaire to measure impulsivity and also filled out a questionnaire about dating behaviors.

Teens with higher impulsivity entered relationships earlier than those with lower impulsivity. Rapid puberty has also been associated with a higher risk of early sexual intercourse. Additionally, factors such as female gender and higher parental education were associated with a lower likelihood of initiating risky sexual behavior.
