Scientists from the Humboldt University of Berlin studied the harmful effects of X-rays on bones. business results published in the journal Nature Communications.

A team of scientists conducted an analysis of the results after focused high-energy X-rays produced by the BESSY II instrument. The bones of mice, fish and some other representatives of the animal world were subjected to irradiation. The researchers then examined the animals’ bones.

The researchers found signs of destruction of the collagen fibers due to the bones being induced by electrons. During X-ray radiation, calcium and phosphorus are ionized, which destroys proteins, including bone collagen.

It was previously believed that X-rays were not that destructive to organisms, but new results show that this is not true, at least for bones. Experts added that the X-rays used in BESSY II are about ten thousand times more intense than the radiation used for medical examinations.
