Nine people in Sydney experienced ‘toxic reactions’, including hallucinations, from a shipment of spinach contaminated with an unknown substance. It has been reported Guard.
In total, nearly 90 people in New South Wales have reported symptoms after eating fresh spinach to date, and at least 33 have sought medical attention.
Nine people from four different households required medical attention after toxic reactions associated with tainted Riviera Farms spinach purchased from a Costco store. The grower began controlling weeds that could cause similar symptoms when accidentally infested with a batch of spinach.
Symptoms of those affected included delirium (confusion), hallucinations, heart palpitations, and blurred vision. Health officials said initial investigations suggested the reactions were due to “accidental contamination” in the food product.
They also reported that some patients were still sick a day after the onset of symptoms.
This batch of spinach was not considered safe to eat and was recommended to be discarded by those who bought it.
