Russian scientists have produced fertilizer from algae for growing hydroponic plants. This was reported by the press service of the Far Eastern Federal University, which is the author of the development.

Hydroponics and aeroponics are an effective way of growing plants where soil or importing it is not possible. In addition, this method allows you to protect the plant from diseases and parasites, as well as dose the consumption of water and nutrients. However, the growth of the culture in this case depends entirely on the chemicals used and the skill of application.

The new fertilizer is based on anafelcia algae, which is widely used in the food industry. The substance is applied in liquid form and has a slightly thick consistency, like natural soy sauce. The effectiveness of fertilizer, according to the assurances of the developers, is not inferior to mineral fertilizers. »«The lettuce grown in our product is comparable in size to the lettuce grown in imported solution. At the same time, our fertilizer will cost less and vegetables will be of higher value because they are more nutritious and of higher quality,” the scientists explain.

Currently, researchers continue to work on the composition to give the vegetables the perfect flavor and aroma. Potentially, the liquid could be used for soilless cultivation of fresh vegetables and fruits in orbit.
