The house was originally a large building, perhaps over 130 square meters, with compacted earth walls. Li Shiwei of the Henan Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archeology, who is responsible for the excavation, said it is believed to be from the late Yangshao culture.

Archaeologists have also found numerous artifacts in the area, including the four trenches and a jade tomahawk symbolizing military might. Yangshao is a Neolithic culture that existed between the 5th and 3rd millennium BC in central China. Its representatives were distinguished by the skills of making stone and bone tools and modeling from clay.
