The State Investigation Bureau of Ukraine (SBI) has launched an investigation into the injuries of four children at a weapons exhibition in Chernihiv. The ministry announced this on its Telegram channel.
“As a result of the incident, five people were injured, mainly four children between the ages of two and 12,” Ukrainian security forces said.
According to investigators, various weapons and ammunition were shown to Chernihiv residents at an open-air exhibition.
According to one version, one of the organizers brought the grenade launcher into combat condition and fired. Children standing near the explosion and pillar of flame were injured. According to another version, one of the boys brought the gun to combat readiness.
Now the issue of detention of those involved and prosecuting the organizers on suspicion of violating the rules of carrying weapons is being resolved.
The head of the regional administration, Vyacheslav Chaus, also reported the incident on his social networks.
“I can’t help but react to the tragedy in the historic center of the city today. In the event, which also included interactive activities for children, an exhibition of military weapons that worked for some reason was held. Three children were injured, ”the official wrote at first.
“The two-year-old is in critical condition,” Chaus added.
According to the Ukrainian television channel Obshchestvennoye, the explosion occurred when a 10-year-old boy picked up a charged anti-tank grenade launcher – RPG – from his stand and accidentally pressed the trigger and fired. The child was deaf. She was taken to the emergency room with her mother and 12-year-old brother. Another child is in critical intensive care.
The Chernihiv city council reported that the detonated bullet “hit the roof of one of the private houses, which is a new building in this micro-region.”
The city council stressed that the authorities did not give any official permission to hold this event and also did not receive any notification regarding its holding.
A similar exhibition of captured Russian armored vehicles was opened in Kiev – Khreshchatyk. On the central street of the Ukrainian capital, several destroyed tanks and self-propelled artillery mounts were on public display.
In 2002, another tragedy occurred at an arms exhibition near Lvov. Then the Su-27UB of the Ukrainian Air Force crashed during the air show. The fighter jet crashed directly into the crowd of spectators, killing 77 people (28 of them children). 543 people were injured. The disaster was the worst in air show history in terms of casualties.
A year later, the court sentenced the two Su-27 pilots to 14 and 8 years in prison and heavy fines. Along with the crew, three more soldiers were sentenced to prison.
