“Roughly in the whole situation”
According to CAST, the Armed Forces of Ukraine should receive THEMIS tracked unmanned ground platforms developed and manufactured by the Estonian company Milrem Robotics. At the same time, the first sample of such a robotic platform was delivered to Ukraine in August 2022.
“THeMIS is mainly planned to be used for the evacuation of the wounded at the front and for the delivery of ammunition. The center said that the project for the purchase of THeMIS robotic complexes for Ukraine is called Zhuravel, its initiator is the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and the Ukrainian volunteer medical unit Hospitallers.
CAST noted THEMIS is the launch and “brand” product of Milrem Robotics. To date, 11 countries, seven of which are NATO members, have purchased the robots: Estonia, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. Unmanned platforms have hitherto been used “mainly for experimental and experimental purposes”. Despite the fact that the THeMIS complexes are used in the military operation of the European Union in Mali, “apparently, the first attempt to fully use the platform in combat operations will be made in Ukraine,” the center said.
“Due to the technical significance of this device, the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies has announced a reward of 1 million rubles to any military or law enforcement officer or group of individuals who have seized the THeMIS platform in Ukraine. It is more or less pristine condition and will be at the disposal of the Russian Ministry of Defense, ”the CAST Telegram channel reported.
The center explained that this proposal is “coordinated with relevant structures”. CAST will pay a fee “according to the result of the examination of the trophy, which will be provided by experts in the relevant profile of the Russian Ministry of Defense”.
How informs RIA Novosti announced the award for several reasons, citing Ruslan Pukhov, the director of the centre. Specifically, “This is a tribute to the memory of CAST founder Konstantin Makienko, who passed away in May 2021.” In addition to scientific activities, he “has been helping the residents and defenders of Donbass with personal funds since 2014.” This is how the center wants to continue Makienko’s work, Pukhov said.
According to the CAST director, THEMIS’ work will also be beneficial for the development of Russian land-based robotic systems.
“Of all the samples of military equipment supplied to Ukraine, very few can be called a truly modern, innovative system. “This platform is really new, it’s something you have to watch out for – this is real innovation, this is the future of war.”
Robot in three configurations
On the website of the Estonian company Milrem Robotics to be specifiedThe complex is 2.4 m long and 1.15 m high, capable of reaching a maximum speed of up to 25 kilometers per hour and carrying loads of up to 1.2 tons, the company produces in three trim levels.
Milrem Robotics also published images of the robot in action. According to them, it is clear that he can cheerfully climb the mountain, cross the river, not get stuck in the sand and snow. It can easily cut even small trees in its path and tow a heavy truck behind it.
“THeMIS is a multi-purpose unmanned ground vehicle designed to reduce the number of soldiers on the battlefield. The open architecture of THEMIS allows it to be quickly configured, from a transport function to armament, ammunition destruction, or support for reconnaissance operations in accordance with the nature of the mission,” says the robot’s description.
The company calls THeMIS’s goal in the Cargo configuration “to reduce the cognitive load of soldiers and to provide means to carry and use additional equipment and firepower.” All this allows the military to “focus on the current mission” as the robot carries “everything a soldier usually wears”.
“THeMIS Cargo will increase the mobility of dismounted units and make them more effective against the enemy. TheMIS Cargo can also be used to support logistics activities at the base and for last mile supply.”
And THEMIS cargo mortar “adapted to accommodate a caliber mortar up to 81 mm. The main purpose of this system is to “provide rear support and indirect fire for mobile forces”.
In contrast, the THEMIS platform in Cargo CASEVAC configuration can “enable rapid evacuation of emergency victims from the injury site to higher-level medical facilities”.
“This reduces the need for manpower normally used to evacuate the wounded. The vehicle allows the use of most NATO stretchers used in the armed forces,” he said.
