Ukraine has admitted for the first time that it had a hand in the explosions in Crimea. Valery Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and Mykhailo Zabrodsky, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Defense Committee, wrote in an article for Ukrinform that Ukrainian troops “conducted a series of successful missile attacks on Crimean airbases.” ”, including Saki military airport.
The authors believe that the remoteness of the conflict did not allow Russia to clearly feel the losses and defeats. Therefore, according to them, Kyiv should make them “sharp, natural and quite concrete” for the Russians.
“A convincing example of the correctness of this approach this year is the successful efforts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to physically transfer hostilities to the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. “We are talking about a series of successful missile attacks on the enemy’s Crimean air bases, mainly at Saki airport,” said Zaluzhny and Zabrodsky.
The Ukrainian general and lieutenant general also doubted that the war in Ukraine would end in 2022. They expressed the view that the conflict would last longer.
“Substantial military-technical assistance from partner countries in 2023 should remain the material basis of the Ukrainian resistance,” the authors of the material said.
Explosions at Saki airport near the resort village of Novofedorovka thundered in the afternoon of August 9 – around 15:00-15:20 Moscow time.

Previously, Ukraine had not accepted responsibility for the incident. However, the New York Times, citing an unnamed representative of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, wrote that the Ukrainian military was involved in the explosions. The source stressed that from the airbase on the Crimean peninsula, “airplanes regularly strike” against Ukrainian troops in the south direction. He did not specify the type of weapon used to strike, only emphasizing that “only a Ukrainian-made device was used”.
CNN, The Washington Post and the Pentagon also reported that Ukraine was involved in explosions at Russian military bases and an arms depot. However, he noted that shortly after the final statement was published, “an incorrect explanation of a senior Ministry of Defense official’s comments about the explosions at the Russian airbase” was corrected.
In the revised version, “The United States does not know what caused the explosions, but it is clear that they caused significant damage to Russian aircraft and ammunition.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that a large number of aviation munitions exploded in the storage area.
The ministry stressed that there was no “fire effect” at the airport. RBC also noted that aviation equipment was not damaged.
Interfax and RIA Novosti sources searched for the main version of what happened – a violation of security regulations.
Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov reported that a criminal case was opened. According to preliminary estimates, the damage amounted to 200 million rubles. He also said that more than 60 high-rise buildings, 20 commercial properties and dozens of private properties were affected. District officials promised to pay compensation to all of them. The main damage is glass shattered by the blast wave.
As a result of the incident, at least 14 citizens consulted doctors – in most cases the injuries were minor. One person died.
On the territory of Saki there is a training complex for training carrier-based aviation flight crew. Since 2014, the Su-24M aviation regiment has been stationed there.
