Experts from the University of Hong Kong found that taking neuroleptics increased the risk of developing breast cancer by more than 30%. They talked about it in a magazine. Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences.
Researchers analyzed several studies involving more than 2 million people in total. As it turned out, the risk of developing breast cancer was on average 30% higher in those taking antipsychotics and increased due to increased dose or longer intake. Therefore, the risk increased by almost 60% when using antipsychotics for more than five years. Drugs that increase prolactin hormone levels have been most strongly associated with breast cancer.
“Given the increasing prevalence and off-label use of antipsychotics worldwide, we believe that a comprehensive clinical evaluation of patients should be performed prior to administration, based on the overall safety profile of antipsychotics,” the authors wrote.
They also did not recommend prescribing antipsychotics that increase prolactin levels in people at high risk of developing breast cancer. According to the researchers, during the reception it is worth monitoring the level of prolactin and, if necessary, lowering it.
