The study contained three methods: neutron tomography (differences in metal structure), dust crushing (determination of the composition of alloys) and the analysis of stresses (showing different tattoo techniques).
The Kılıçlar belonged to Dagomei’s legendary women’s military unit and was probably used for ritual purposes. The analysis revealed that knives were made in three different production techniques made of mined metal in different places: from West Africa to Brazil.
The study shed light on African metallurgical traditions, but also showed the possibilities of examination methods without damaging the cultural heritage artifacts.
