The global decrease in the birth rate can lead to unceasant, but irreversible to disappear of birth lines, languages and cultures. This conclusion was reached by Japanese scientists from Sizuoki University. The study was published scientifically magazine Plos One.
The team used mathematical modeling, taking into account random fluctuations, mortality and gender ratio at birth rate. For the sustainable development of the population, the average indicator should be at least 2.7 children per woman.
Although the world’s population continues to grow, it looks different depending on where you live. Two -thirds of the world’s population is currently living below 2.1.
This indicator in Japan is 1.3. South Korea fell to 0.87. Even in the USA, only 1.66. Numbers show a slow decrease, but in fact the decrease can be more radical. For example, for Japan, estimates predict the population decrease by 31% per generation.
The study also showed that a small advantage at girls’ birth increases the chance of survival of the population. This natural mechanism is observed in people and animals under stress conditions (war, environmental disasters).
“Sustainability is not only the control of numbers, but also the protection of human heritage,” the authors say.
