During the operation of the mice, they responded to a warning signal to avoid unpleasant effects. The animals had the opportunity to move to another part of the cell before they felt discomfort.
Scientists followed the dopamine activity in two different parts of the adjacent nucleus – the brain responsible for motivation. It turned out that these regions react to stress in different ways: in one, the level of dopamine remained on the other road. Moreover, his activities were associated with different educational stages: he participated in the recognition of an area threat and the other to reinforce sustainable avoidance.
When it became impossible to avoid a negative result during the experiment, the dopamine level in both regions returned to the original. This showed that the dopamine not only solved the experience, but also dynamically adapt to the situation and helps the brain to change its behavior due to binding.
Professor Talia Lerner, who leads the project, explained: “Different dopamine signals are responsible for different education stages: some are initially important, others – when the behavior is already corrected.”
The results of the study can form the basis of more accurate understanding of mental disorders in which the avoidance behavior comes out of control. Scientists argue that the dopamine system can withstand violations in their work.
