People in southern China observed a rare, ring-shaped rainbow cloud called the Pileus. About informs CGTN.
A rainbow scarf cloud surrounding a growing rain cloud was caught on video in Puning city, south China’s Guangdong province. Such clouds are also called pileus. They got this name because of their resemblance to the ancient Roman hat. Sometimes even a few clouds are observed to be stacked on top of each other.
This time there was only one pile, but it was rainbow colored. A rainbow cloud is formed as a result of the cooling and condensation of moist air containing solid ice particles. Directed at a right angle, sunlight is refracted between drops and ice crystals in the cloud, and a rainbow appears.
Later, a rain cloud rose from below and “eaten” the rainbow cap.
The pileus is formed by a strong upward flow directed from the bottom up. This usually heralds the onset of bad weather. Pylaeus is generally less impressive, but in this case the angle of the sun at sunset and the size of the pileus resulted in a very bright rainbow.
