American physicists from the North East University in Boston found a strange similarity among the mechanical exposure behaviors between snow avalanches and behavior of living fabrics. Discovery can create new approaches to the treatment of wounds and cancer metastases. The study was published scientifically magazine Nature Communication (Natcoms).
Using computer modeling, the team revealed that cells in the tissues react to stress according to a chain reaction principle – like a snowy layer in front of an avalanche. With a critical pressure level, the local restructuring of 4-5 cells triggers the large-scale rearrangement of the entire tissue.
The authors of the study said, “During the restructuring of a small cell group, the energy released enables neighboring cells to repeat this process – mechanical communication emerges,” he said.
Previously, mechanical changes in the tissues were believed to be local. However, new data show collective changes in large areas.
Scientists believe that the reconstruction of avalanche -like cells can be a new way to contain cancer.
Now the team cooperates with biologists to verify the effect of “cellular avalanches” in real tissues. If the hypothesis is confirmed, humanity will take a new tool to control the basic biological processes.
Previously, scientists for the first time Raised New teeth using a combination of pigs and people.
