In the world of wild animals, men are dominant as a rule: they are larger, stronger and tend to aggression. But Bonobo – the closest relatives of a person – everything is different. In the wild nature, the international group of scientists found that the female Bonobo maintained high social status due to the solidarity and coalitions they created with each other. Published in İş Magazine Communication Biology (CB).
Unlike most mammals in which the power in the group belongs to men, Bonobo usually makes key decisions: who will be shared and when the arrogant man will be replaced. Scientists have analyzed the observation of six wild population in Bonobo in the Congo Democratic Republic for more than 30 years. The focus was a 1,786 conflict between men and women won by women in 1,099 cases.
How do they succeed? Answer in coalitions. In 85% of cases, women unite against men and show power according to number and coordination. According to the researchers, this is the first convincing example of how women’s solidarity can change the traditional, male power structure among mammals.
Martin Surbek, one of the authors, said, “This is incredible: Women from different groups still create strong unions and protect their interests effectively,” he said.
At the same time, the coalitions occur rapidly in seconds – mostly in response to aggression from male, especially for offspring. Females not only protect, they can follow men on trees, scream heartly, and in some cases cause serious injuries.
However, the authors emphasis: This does not mean that women are always dominant. The study has revealed various power models in different populations.
Barbara Fut, who has been the Luikotale Research Station for 30 years, said, “It is more accurate to say that Bonobo women have high status, not absolute power,” he said.
In addition to coalitions, reproductive properties also affect the distribution of power. In Bonobo, ovulation is hidden from men, which makes it impossible to control mating. This increases women’s independence and reduces aggressive strategies in men, because they cannot correctly predict it when it is an efficient period of the female.
Why did Bonobo go along this road – still a puzzle.
“I am still surprised why they cause women’s solidarity. Maybe we never know the exact answer, but this real hope: the women of our nearest evolutionary relatives have found a way to achieve equality,” he said.
