Chinese scientists from the Medical University of Tianjin revealed fundamental differences in the structure of the brain and in the behavior of male and sister adults. The discovery only rejects common stereotypes about “problem” children and reveals the connection between the characteristics of their development and the education environment. The study was published scientifically magazine Nature Human Behavior (NHB).
Past surveys gave different and sometimes contradictory results implying the negative consequences of the fact that the child is the only person and sometimes emphasizing the positive consequences.
In addition, while these negative and positive effects are inconsistent in different studies, some studies, as a rule, suggested that better work at school is more professional and less problematic and showed the opposite of others.
The team analyzed the data of the participants in the China Imaging Genetics Project (Chimgen), comparing the brain and behavior of a single child to those with his brother or sister.
The study has taken into account the structure and activity of the brain, its coinative abilities (memory and training), mental health and personal characteristics.
Scientists have found that the only children in the family often have language skills due to more advanced ties in the speech areas of the brain. There is also an enlarged cerebellum that provides better coordination control.
However, only children are more likely to reduce motor activity and have a total volume of the brain. The causes of the last phenomenon are still uncertain.
Unlike the myths of “egoism” or “social mismatch”, single children showed higher cognitive abilities, the best indicators of mental health, and neutral or positive social skills.
According to scientists, not the absence of brothers, but the main impact on the development of children, but the socio-economic status of the family, parental care level and access to education.
It happened before KnownThe only children in the family are grown more frequently in adulthood.
