American scientists from the University of New York discovered that men and women have done opposite things under the influence of sadness. The study was published scientifically magazine Feeling.
230 adults participated in the attempt, which was combined with foreigners of the same sex in random couples. Before communication, one of the participants was offered to remember a sad event from life and a partner neutral experience. Later, couples performed joint tasks, including speech and oral games.
Researchers recorded their behavior (smiles, gestures), physiological reactions (heart rhythm) and the degree of synchronization of emotional situations between the partners.
The results showed that men tend to mask the increasing activity and sadness. Sad memories forced the participants to smile more often and to move more actively.
At the same time, women showed the opposite behavior: they smiled less and was emotionally suspended.
Even if men and women hide their sorrow, the effect was preserved. However, the tendency emerged in physiological reactions.
According to scientists, differences can be caused by social norms. Men should compensate for sadness with increasing activity to look more social and prevent perception as vulnerable. Women feel less pressure to hide the sadness, because they are considered more “acceptable” feelings for them.
Previously, researchers discovered An unusual useful effect from negative emotions.
