Biologists have found that electronic cigarettes increase the risk of coronavirus disease.

Inhaling e-cigarette aerosols increases the body’s vulnerability to coronavirus infection. Preprint article about it published in the bioRxiv repository.

To find this out, the researchers purchased several brands of e-cigarettes and a range of nicotine liquids for them. These cigarettes are attached to a special device that causes them to release the same aerosol when consumed by a person. Living cells were treated with this steam and began to watch how they began to interact with the colored SARS-CoV-2 particle simulators. It turns out that electronic cigarettes increase the vulnerability of cells to the coronavirus. This was manifested by more active penetration of synthetic analogues of SARS-CoV-2. This was especially true for liquids with the highest nicotine concentrations. This was because nicotine and various molecules in the liquid for evaporation increased the activity of the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 proteins, which play an important role in the penetration of the coronavirus into cells.

Scientists believe that this pattern should be considered both by the newspapers themselves and by the doctors involved.
