Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Research Institute found a way to increase steel power and bend like a towel. Such operations form a microstructure that increases resistance to damage 10 thousand times in the metal. About it reports South China Morning Post (SCMP).
One of the main problems in metallurgy is the “fatigue” of metals. This is the process of microscopic damage accumulation under the influence of cyclic loads, which eventually leads to the formation of cracks and the destruction of the structure. This is especially critical for welded seams, turbine blades, elements of nuclear reactors and bridges.
Chinese engineers proposed a solution: metal strengthened by bending it in a special installation – a towel squeezing principle. This made it possible to create a three -dimensional structure from the smallest “grains in the material, each of which is much smaller than micron (one millionth of a meter). Such a structure serves as a bow system: when the coup is absorbed and activates even more intense inner layers, it increases the load resistance of the metal.
As a result, the fluidity limit has doubled and resistance to fatigue damage – 10 thousand times. Scientists, if the normal steel part is destroyed after 10 million load cycles, then after modification – only after 100 billion.
New technology can be used in the production of underwater pipelines, crankshafts, connection sticks and other parts that work under constant pressure and other parts exposed to vibrations.
