The team examined the old breeds of 1.6 billion years from Georgetown Ledge in Queensland – one of the few places where parts of the ancient continental crust are preserved. The analysis showed that the volcanic rocks, which became the basis of the continents at the end of the water, have participated in the process of melting and conversion.
“In the early period of the world, the volcanic breeds at the bottom of the ocean changed under the influence of hot water, and then the additional water from the mantle dived into the depths of the shell in which it started to melt at temperatures of 700-750 ° C.
Experts found that two liquid sources participated in the formation of the continental shell: hydrothermal changes in volcanic rocks and water deeply from the world mantle.
The process caused the melting chain reaction, which led to the formation of granite series, which lasted millions of years and the foundations of modern continents.
This discovery not only deepens the understanding of the geological history of the planet, but also helps to examine the processes of the formation of continents on other planets.
