However, a new study shows that this test may be useful for long -term risk assessment, even if a person does not have acute symptoms.
Scientists have found that people with troponin levels in the blood have been more likely to transfer a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. The test turned out to be particularly effective when analyzing the so-called intermediate risk group-35% of people with a possibility of a cardiovascular event for 10 years between 2.5% and 15%.
As part of the studies, researchers compared data about troponin with traditional risk factors: Age, cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and others. The results have shown that the evaluation of the troponin level in the blood increases the accuracy of the prediction only four times compared to guidance only for cholesterol.
Scientists say that troponin test can be an alternative to expensive and laborious exams. It is already widely used, cheap and can significantly increase the preventive diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.
