German scientists from the University of Henry Heine (HHU) found that VPS35 protein protein mitochondria (energy stations) from genetic material damage and reduces the risk of age -related disease. Research Results published Science Developments (SCIADV).
MTDNK damage can cause a number of serious health problems, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, cardiovascular diseases and second type of diabetes. They also accelerate the aging process. Typically, cells can define such damage and initiate recovery operations, but in some cases this system fails.
A new study showed that cells activate the special cycle system in response to MTDNK damage. An important role in this process is played by Retromerin protein complex and lysosomes – organelles that perform the “processing” functions within the cell. These structures help to remove the damaged genetic material and prevent accumulation, thus protecting cell health.
Scientists confirmed the effectiveness of this mechanism on model organisms – fruit flies. Experiments have shown that the VPS35 protein plays a central role in the operation. Activation allows you to eliminate damaged MTDNK faster and improve the work of mitochondria.
