A group of international scientists from the US, Czech Republic, Poland and other countries discovered significant changes in Greenland coastal areas where melting glaciers were exposed to 1620 kilometers of land. The study was published scientifically magazine Nature Climate Change (NCC).
The results of the experts are based on the analysis of satellite images from 2000 to 2020.
In particular, in the Greenland glacier area of Zachariah Iskostrom, where the new coastline was opened 81 kilometers of the withdrawal of ice, there were particularly noticeable changes – twice the other glaciers in the region.
In total, 2466 kilometers, which was previously stored under the ice of the coastline, appeared in the Northern Hemisphere for the specified time, and two -thirds of these changes are exactly for Greenland.
Scientists also, 29 on the shores of the shores of Greenland 35 new island with an area of more than 0.5 square kilometers, he said. It is noteworthy that 13 of the discovered islands do not have modern maps that may cause questions about regional commitment and potential natural resources.
These changes show the conversion scale of the Arctic landscape under the influence of climate changes. According to researchers, the processes that have occupied centuries in the past are now taking place throughout the life of the same generation.
Previously, scientists learnedThe melting of Greenland glaciers has accelerated six times in the last 10 years.
