Scientists from Medical Center University have found that a stroke can significantly accelerate the process of losing cognitive abilities. At the same time, this process may occur faster in people who are higher. Published in İş MagazineJama Network Open.
Previously, education was believed to protect the brain and slow down the development of dementia after a stroke, but a new study shows the opposite.
The analysis of the data of more than two thousand patients who had stroked between 1971-2019 showed that graduates of universities show the best results in the first tests after a stroke and evaluated the speed of memory, attention and information processing. However, the ability to manage daily tasks, such as working memory and solving problems, deteriorates faster than people with a low level of education.
“Our results show that higher learning helps to protect the working capacity of the brain to a certain damage limit. However, this mechanism may fail after a stroke, and then the cognitive decrease is very quick.
Scientists say that the number of strokes associated with Alzheimer’s disease or the presence of the Apoe4 gene is not affected by this phenomenon. This means that a sharp deterioration in cognitive functions may occur after the first stroke.
Researchers hope that their work will help to develop more effective methods to prevent dementia in patients with stroke.
