Brookhevensky National Laboratory scientists proposed a hypothesis of the possible collapse of the proton, which has been considered almost eternal so far. Physics Peter Denton and Khuman Davudiasl examined the possibility of the proton to leave faster in other parts of the universe or in the past. Published in İş Magazine Physical Review D (PRD).
According to standard physics, experimental data imposes a strict restriction for the life of the proton – at least 10³⁴ years, which significantly exceeds the age of the universe. However, if you take into account the new hypotheses associated with the interaction of the proton with the dark matter, its life may be about 10 years, which allows it to decay under astrophysical conditions.
The authors of the study examined two scenarios in which the additional temperature obtained from the deterioration of the protons could affect physical processes. If the protons were separated at a high speed, the secreted heat melted the inner core of our planet. However, as the nucleus remained intact, the researchers were able to adjust the lower limit throughout the life of the proton – at least 2 × 10⁸ years. The coldest known neutron star is PSR J2144-3933. This made another assessment: at least 1.5 × 10⁸ years.
Physicists also offer alternative methods to search for decay scars. For example, an analysis of examination of examples of the Moon olivin mineral or carbon isotopes in natural gas.
If the hypothesis of the variable stability of the proton is confirmed, it can translate the basic ideas about the nature of the substance and the universe, and at the same time give new clues about the features of the dark matter and the hidden forces operating in space.
