Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new method of drug yield that can reduce the cost of diabetes and obesity therapy and increase its efficiency. Peptite therapies are drugs based on short amino acid chains – peptides that perform various biological functions in the body. These drugs are actively used in medicine, especially for the treatment of diabetes, obesity and some types of cancer. Previously, scientists tried to solve this problem by connecting peptides to the immunoglobulin G (IGG) antibodies in the laboratory, but this method required complex and expensive preparation. The new approach provides this process directly in the body, where a special peptide platform connects the drug to antibodies using a chemical bond.
During the tests on the mice, the method allowed to maintain the control of the glucose level in the blood and helped to reduce weight within 15 days after the only application of the drug. At the same time, the dose of the active substance was four times lower than the standard. These data confirm the effectiveness of the new method and the potential of future use.
In addition to diabetes and obesity, a team of researchers plans to adapt technology to the fight against cancer and creates antibodies carrying several different medical molecules. This can significantly reduce the cost of peptide treatment and increase its efficiency.
